California Highway Call Boxes                      Call Box

The Law Center has been advocating for years to add TTYs to the thousands of call boxes located on many highways and freeways in California.  As recently as a year ago, 18 of 21 call box agencies, called SAFEs (Service Authority for Freeway Emergencies), did not have TTY-equipped call boxes.  Only those in Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura Counties had TTYs.  We have been able to secure assurances from all 18 SAFEs to install TTYs over the next few years.  We initiated a class action lawsuit against nine of them along with the CHP and Caltrans in federal court (See Latest News Related to Call Box Cases).

California Courts

The Law Center has worked with many courts in California to improve deaf access to their services.  Recently, the focus has been to advocate for them to improve the information on their websites with the aim that people can easily find out how to request interpreters, real-time captioning or assistive listening devices in order to participate as parties, witnesses or jurors in civil, including small claims and family court services, or criminal cases.  (See Access to California Courts)

Lawyer Referral Services

The Law Center recently began efforts to improve deaf access to California’s 65 State Bar certified lawyer referral services.  Only a few of the LRS have policies relating to deaf access, such as providing interpreters for initial client interviews with referral panel attorneys.  The Law Center is working with the State Bar to educate LRS and provide them with information they and their member attorneys need to accommodate deaf people who seek their services.

Airports

For the past few years, the Law Center has been working to improve deaf access at Bay Area airports.  We were co-counsel in a successfully concluded lawsuit against SFO that will make that airport a model for airports nationwide.  We also have been working with both Oakland International Airport and Mineta San Jose International Airport to make them equally accessible to deaf travelers.
